Meta releases open AI model files and criticizes closed rivals

In short: Meta says it will make more of its AI models available for others to download and change, and Mark Zuckerberg criticized rivals that keep their AI more locked down.

What happened

Meta released the “weights” for a new AI model called Muse Glimmer. Weights are the stored settings inside an AI system (like the knobs and dials that shape how it responds). With the weights, outside developers can download the model and modify it.

Meta also said it plans to release the weights for a more powerful model, Muse Spark, in the coming weeks. Earlier this year, Meta did not release Muse Spark’s weights, and said it was due to safety concerns.

At the same time, Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg published an essay arguing that powerful AI should not be concentrated in the hands of a few companies or governments. He pointed to rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, saying many labs focus on building AI mainly for institutions, which could shift power away from individuals.

Meta also announced a $1 billion fund for communities that host its US data centers. Data centers are large buildings full of computers, and they can use a lot of electricity and water. Local residents in some places have pushed back against new data center projects for that reason.

Why it matters

This debate affects who gets to use the most capable AI tools and on what terms. An “open” approach can make it easier for smaller companies, researchers, and hobbyists to build new products, but it can also make it easier for bad actors to misuse the same tools. Meta is betting that wider access, plus outside scrutiny (more people looking for problems), is a better balance than keeping the strongest systems behind a paywall.
