DoorDash is testing dd-cli, a tool that lets developers and AI agents search stores, build carts, and place DoorDash orders from a text window.
In short: DoorDash is testing “dd-cli,” a tool that lets developers and AI assistants place DoorDash orders from a command line.
DoorDash has opened a limited beta, which is an early test, for a new tool called “dd-cli.” “CLI” stands for command line interface, which is a text-only way to use a computer (like typing instructions into a blank window instead of clicking buttons).
According to DoorDash co-founder and CTO Andy Fang, the beta is available by waitlist to developers in the U.S. and Canada who use macOS. The tool lets them search stores, look for deals, build a cart, and check out, all from the command line.
DoorDash says the tool can also be used by AI agents. An AI agent is software that can take actions on your behalf, like a helper that can follow steps, not just answer questions. In practice, that could mean a developer builds a system where an AI assistant can assemble a food or grocery order and submit it through DoorDash.
DoorDash has tried other chat based ordering options recently, including ordering through iMessage and a built-in chatbot called “Ask DoorDash.” The company also connects with other chatbots, including ChatGPT and Claude, according to TechCrunch.
Most people will still use the DoorDash app. But tools like this make it easier for other apps and AI assistants to “plug into” ordering, like giving them a set of knobs and buttons behind the scenes. Over time, that could change how people shop, for example by asking an assistant to find lunch deals and place an order without opening multiple apps.
