Cursor has launched Origin, a new place to store and manage code. It is positioned as an alternative to GitHub and can sync with GitHub projects.
In short: Cursor has launched Origin, a new service for storing and managing software code, and it is designed to sync with GitHub instead of fully replacing it.
Cursor, a startup known for its AI Code Editor (a tool that helps people write and edit software), announced a new product called Origin. Origin is a code hosting platform, which is basically an online “home” for a project’s code, similar to how Google Drive stores documents.
Origin is built to handle common tasks developers use GitHub for. That includes working together on the same code, browsing and editing files, and managing pull requests (suggested changes that someone asks to add to the main version). It also stores projects in repositories (folders for code and its history).
The launch comes during a period when many developers have complained about GitHub outages and slow performance. TechCrunch noted that GitHub had a long global outage the same day Origin launched, with degraded service lasting over six hours.
Cursor says Origin can work alongside GitHub. Users can connect their GitHub account, view repositories they can sync, and move code back and forth between the two services.
When GitHub has problems, teams can lose hours of work time because they cannot access or update the code they need. A second option that can sync with GitHub could give developers and companies a backup plan, like keeping a spare key that still fits the same lock.
