OpenAI says ChatGPT can now create and edit animated GIFs from a text prompt or an uploaded photo, including speed and frame-by-frame changes.
In short: OpenAI says ChatGPT can now create animated GIFs from a text prompt or an uploaded photo, and you can edit the GIF inside ChatGPT.
OpenAI is rolling out a new feature that lets ChatGPT make animated GIFs. A GIF is a short, looping animation, like the moving images people share in group chats.
You can create a GIF by typing a request, or by uploading a photo and asking ChatGPT to turn it into an animation. OpenAI says you can also change the animation speed and edit individual frames (the single pictures that make up the motion, like flipping through a cartoon made of many pages).
OpenAI shared an example prompt, “can you make a gif of a cat dancing?” ChatGPT can generate the GIF and then let you view it frame by frame, adjust playback speed, and share it.
This update is launching alongside OpenAI’s new “Images 2.6” model, which is the system ChatGPT uses to generate images. OpenAI also says Images 2.6 makes image generation faster in ChatGPT.
OpenAI says people now generate more than 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT and its API (an API is a way for other apps to connect to OpenAI’s tools), up from 3 billion per week reported in September. Images 2.6 is rolling out to ChatGPT and Codex users on web, desktop, and mobile.
For regular users, this makes it easier to create and tweak shareable animations without switching between different apps. It also shows how ChatGPT is expanding from text answers into more built-in media tools, including simple editing controls that used to require separate software.
