Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is seeking to sell some assets to Disney, after lawsuits and safety concerns about its chatbots.
In short: Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US and is seeking to sell some of its assets to Disney.
Character.AI, a company known for chatbots people can chat with or roleplay with, said it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Chapter 11 is a legal process that lets a company keep operating while it works out a plan to pay what it owes or sell parts of the business (like getting breathing room while you reorganize your finances).
In a press release and a company blog post, Character.AI said the filing is meant to help run a sale process for the company and its assets. In its bankruptcy paperwork, Character.AI listed estimated debts and other obligations of $50 million to $100 million.
The filing says Disney would be the “lead bidder,” which means it sets the first serious offer that others can try to beat. Disney would pay $20 million for some assets that were not described in detail. Disney would also provide transition support using former Character.AI employees it has hired, and it would get a nonexclusive license to certain intellectual property, meaning Disney can use it but Character.AI could also license it to others.
Character.AI has faced lawsuits and safety concerns about how its chatbots behave, including how they may affect vulnerable users. This bankruptcy filing and possible Disney deal could decide what happens to Character.AI’s products and user communities, and it also shows how quickly popular AI apps can run into legal and safety problems.
