The founder, David Lawrence, left Harvard Law School after a controversial on-campus shooting involving a police officer. He started Blue Voice with Amit Patankar, a former Google engineer, and Michael Gropman, a retired Boston police deputy chief.

Blue Voice says officers at 225 county agencies across 25 states use the tool daily. The company says it answers a question about once a minute.

Lawrence told TechCrunch that general chatbots can be wrong, and that Blue Voice is designed to point users back to the original rule or regulation, rather than just producing an answer. Blue Voice also says it can provide detailed school maps on officers’ phones during active-shooter emergencies.
