Bill Gates said weak US action leaves the world more exposed to bioweapons risk, including new threats made easier by AI.
In short: Bill Gates said the world is more exposed to bioweapons risks because the US is not doing enough to prepare for AI misuse.
Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder and a major global health funder, spoke at the Financial Times Future of AI Summit. He warned that artificial intelligence could make it easier for bad actors to create biological weapons.
A biological weapon is a harmful germ or toxin used to make people sick on purpose. Gates said AI could help someone find and combine information faster, a bit like having a very powerful research assistant. That could lower the barrier for planning an attack or designing a dangerous pathogen.
Gates also warned that this could lead to a pandemic “significantly worse than Covid,” according to the FT. His comments linked the risk to a lack of strong action by Donald Trump, saying this inaction leaves the world more exposed.
Most people will never handle dangerous biology, but AI tools are becoming widely available. Gates’ point is that when powerful tools get easier to use, safety rules and public health planning need to keep up. That includes better disease monitoring, faster vaccine work, and clear limits on the most risky kinds of research.
