In a Verge interview, Bill Gates said AI could disrupt jobs and security for decades and argued governments should require safeguards in powerful AI systems.
In short: Bill Gates said society should expect about 20 years of major disruption from AI and he urged governments to set and enforce safety rules.
Bill Gates spoke with The Verge on its Decoder podcast about how quickly AI is improving and what that could mean for everyday life. He said the next two decades could be “tumultuous,” with big changes to jobs and social life.
Gates argued that the near-term danger is not whether AI is “conscious,” meaning self-aware. He said the bigger issue is that AI can be used as a tool for harm, like helping criminals launch cyberattacks (breaking into computer systems) or supporting bioterrorism planning.
He also said the riskiest versions are AI models where people can remove “safeguards,” meaning built-in limits that try to stop misuse. He compared the need for oversight to safety rules in areas like cars and planes, where governments set standards instead of leaving it up to competing companies.
Gates said regulation should focus on requiring safeguards and monitoring, especially for very capable AI systems. He warned that relying on lawsuits after harm happens will not work well for issues like cyberattacks.
If Gates is right, the impact will not stay inside tech companies. It could affect whether your job changes quickly, how secure banks and power grids are, and what rules exist for AI tools you use. His comments also highlight a growing split in public opinion, between people who want faster AI rollout and people who want stronger controls first.
