Amazon Web Services released Strands Decider 2B, a small open source AI model that picks from fixed options and shows how confident it is.
In short: Amazon Web Services has released Strands Decider 2B, an open-source AI model designed to quickly choose between pre-set options and report how sure it is.
Amazon Web Services, or AWS, said its Strands Labs team has released Strands Decider 2B. AWS describes it as a “decision model,” meaning it is built to pick an answer from a list of allowed choices, instead of writing open-ended text like many chatbots do.
AWS says the model is open source, so developers can inspect the code and use it in their own projects. The company also says it is small enough to run locally, which means on a person’s own computer or server, rather than only in a large cloud data center.
According to TechCrunch, the project started after AWS engineer Marc Brooker saw a similar model called Jev from TypeSafe and tried building his own version. AWS later packaged that work into an official release from Strands Labs. This comes as other companies, including OpenAI, are also announcing similar “decision” focused tools.
For everyday users, this could show up in apps that need fast, consistent choices, like deciding the next step in a multi-step task. You can think of it like a multiple-choice helper, not an essay writer, and it also tells you how confident it feels about its pick. That confidence score may help companies build systems that behave more predictably, and potentially at lower cost, than always using a large chatbot model.
