World expands US rollout of iris scan IDs to block AI bot swarms

World is using iris scans to prove a user is a real person, aiming to reduce fake accounts and automated AI attacks as it expands in US cities.

About 3 hours ago•Ethics & Safety

In short: More services are turning to iris scans and similar biometrics to prove someone online is a real person, not an AI bot, and World is expanding this approach in the US.

What's going on

Websites and apps are facing a growing problem, it is getting easier to create huge numbers of fake accounts using AI. These can be used for scams, spam, and coordinated attacks that overwhelm online systems. Some experts call these “agent swarms,” meaning many automated AI accounts acting at once, like a crowd rushing a store entrance.

One response is “proof of personhood,” which is a way to confirm that each account belongs to a unique human. The World project, formerly known as Worldcoin, does this by scanning a person’s iris using a device it calls an orb. The scan creates a World ID, which is stored on a blockchain (a shared online record book that is hard to alter after the fact).

World says it has scanned about 12 million people globally. After verification, users can receive WLD tokens through a mobile app. The company is now rolling out in US cities including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco, in a US environment where regulators have recently taken a lighter enforcement approach, according to the report.

What to watch

This approach could make it harder for bots to create endless accounts, but it raises privacy concerns because iris scans are sensitive personal data. Some governments have already pushed back, Thailand banned the service and ordered data deletion. Another open question is whether systems like this can scale to billions of people, and whether future regulatory changes in the US and other countries will slow or limit adoption.
