WordPress.com is adding built-in AI tools to help users write, edit, design, and connect outside AI agents that can publish and automate site tasks.
In short: WordPress.com now includes built-in AI tools and a way to connect outside AI agents that can help create and publish content from inside the platform.
WordPress.com introduced new AI features in early 2026, including the WordPress AI Assistant. The company says the assistant can help people build and manage a website, write and edit text, and even help with design and images.
WordPress.com also added support for connecting external AI agents using OAuth 2.1 and the Model Context Protocol, or MCP. OAuth is a common login and permission system (like giving a trusted helper a key that only opens certain doors). MCP is a set of rules that helps an AI agent understand what information it is allowed to use and how to reference it.
According to the announcement, these connections can include guardrails such as tagging information as high-trust or subjective, and requiring citations back to original sources. The key point for users is that these tools are available inside WordPress.com, so people may not need to install extra plugins to get started.
WordPress powers a large share of websites, so making AI features built-in could lower the effort needed to publish online. It could help small businesses, creators, and nonprofits draft posts faster and keep sites updated without technical skills.
At the same time, easier automation can also mean more machine-written content on the web. That may put more pressure on site owners to review what gets published and be clear about sources and accuracy.
