The Verge reports that Fidji Simo will take several weeks of medical leave and that OpenAI is shifting some product and business responsibilities.
In short: A Verge report says OpenAI executive Fidji Simo is taking a medical leave for several weeks, and other leaders will cover parts of her job.
The Verge reported that OpenAI shared an internal memo about changes among its top executives. According to the memo, Fidji Simo will step away on medical leave “for the next several weeks” due to a neuroimmune condition.
The Verge said Simo is described in the memo as OpenAI’s “CEO of AGI deployment.” AGI is a shorthand some AI labs use for a future kind of AI that could handle many different tasks, more like a general helper than a single purpose tool (like the difference between a Swiss Army knife and one screwdriver). The report also says she had been OpenAI’s CEO of Applications until recently.
While Simo is out, the memo says OpenAI president Greg Brockman will take charge of product work. The Verge report says that includes work on OpenAI’s “super app” efforts, meaning a plan to combine more features into one main app. On the business side, the report says OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon will take on a larger role.
Separately, public listings as of early 2026 have still shown Simo as “CEO of Applications,” and the memo details were not widely confirmed outside the Verge report at the time.
Leadership changes can affect what a company ships and how fast it moves. For everyday users of ChatGPT and other OpenAI products, that can mean different priorities for new features, reliability, and how the tools are packaged into apps.
