Ukraine says it is building an AI-guided air defense system using battlefield data to predict attacks faster, as it tries to keep up with Russia.
In short: Ukraine’s defense ministry is pushing ahead with AI for targeting and air defense, including a planned nationwide AI-guided air defense system by mid-2026.
Ukraine says it is developing new military systems that use artificial intelligence, meaning software that learns patterns from past data. The goal is to spot threats faster and respond with less human effort, as Ukraine faces manpower shortages and Russia’s larger forces.
A key project is a nationwide AI-guided air defense system planned for mid-2026. According to the report, it uses a platform called Dataroom, developed with Palantir Technologies and Brave1, to help predict Russian attacks. The system is trained on millions of real battlefield inputs, including images from drones and sensor telemetry, which is machine-recorded measurements from equipment (like a car’s dashboard data, but for aircraft and weapons).
Ukraine says the software can turn incoming data into predicted flight paths and mark them on digital maps within seconds. It is meant to help cue interceptors against Shahed-type drones, and it may support more autonomous interceptors such as a system described as the Octopus platform.
The report also describes Ukraine’s broader push to connect AI with drones, artillery, and reconnaissance, so information and decisions move faster through the “kill chain,” meaning the steps from spotting a target to striking it. Ukraine has also expanded drone production, with about 500 manufacturers and a large share of strikes now involving drones.
This effort depends on AI reliably telling real threats from decoys and camouflage, which both sides use. There are also ethical concerns about training AI on battlefield videos, but Ukraine argues it needs better AI targeting to compete with Russia.
