A Truth Social photo comparing a White House column before and after restoration appears AI-edited and was flagged by Google’s SynthID detector.
In short: President Donald Trump posted a “before and after” White House column photo that appears to be edited with AI.
President Donald Trump shared a series of photos on Truth Social about renovation work at the White House. One image showed a side by side comparison of an older-looking column and a “restored” version.
The Verge reports that the “restored” side of the image shows signs it may have been changed using AI. People on Reddit pointed out mismatched details, including an uneven number of steps on each side of the structure. The steps also do not match the “before” photo.
Other parts of the two images look almost too similar to be separate photos. The angle and small details line up closely, including window reflections and a piece of protective cardboard near the bottom of the column. The “newly-painted” column also looks unusually smooth.
The Verge says it uploaded the image to Google’s SynthID Detector. This tool checks for an invisible marker that can be added to media made or changed by AI (like a hidden stamp you cannot see). The detector flagged the image as “made or edited with OpenAI.”
The Verge notes that real photos showed people painting the front of the White House in June, so the column may have actually been repainted. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
When public figures share images, even small edits can confuse people about what is real. As AI editing gets easier, tools and careful checks become more important for anyone trying to trust photos online.
