Harvard Business Review research finds some workers feel mental fatigue from overusing and monitoring AI tools, with higher rates in marketing and HR.
In short: A Harvard Business Review study says some workers are feeling “AI brain fry,” a kind of mental fatigue from using and checking AI tools too much.
Researchers describe “AI brain fry” as mental fatigue that happens when people use AI tools beyond what their brains can comfortably handle. It can show up when workers keep writing prompts (the instructions you type into an AI), reviewing AI answers, switching between several tools, and watching for mistakes at a fast pace.
In a survey of 1,488 full-time US workers, 14% of AI users said they had experienced this exhaustion. People reported symptoms like mental fog, trouble focusing, slower decision-making, headaches, and a “buzzing” or foggy feeling.
The rates were not the same across jobs. Marketing workers reported the highest level at 25.9%, followed by human resources at 19.3%, operations at 17.9%, and software engineering at 17.8%. Legal and compliance roles were closer to 6%. The study said it was more common among early AI adopters and people using multiple AI tools at the same time.
Researchers said this is different from burnout. Burnout is usually about long-term overwork and feeling you cannot control your time. AI brain fry is more like sudden overload, described as having too many browser tabs open in your head.
The study linked AI brain fry to higher error rates and a higher intention to quit. To reduce the risk, workers can limit how many AI tools they juggle, avoid constant switching, and take breaks. For managers, the researchers suggested using AI mainly where it reliably saves time, like document summaries, basic coding, and first drafts, rather than adding more checking work. They also suggested productivity may peak when AI use is about 7% to 10% of work hours.
