SpaceX confirmed a deal that lets it buy AI coding tool Cursor later this year for $60B, or pay $10B instead, as it works more on AI.
In short: SpaceX says it has a deal that lets it buy the coding tool Cursor for $60 billion later this year, or pay Cursor $10 billion instead.
SpaceX confirmed it is working closely with Cursor, a company that makes an automated programming platform. This type of tool helps software developers write and edit code, similar to an always on spellchecker and assistant for programming.
According to SpaceX, Cursor has given SpaceX the right to acquire the company later this year for $60 billion. If SpaceX does not buy Cursor, SpaceX says it can instead pay a $10 billion fee tied to their work together.
Deals sometimes include a “breakup fee,” which is money paid if a planned purchase does not happen. What is unusual here is the size of the fee and how SpaceX described it as payment for joint work on AI.
The Verge notes that an IPO may be coming for a group of Elon Musk-linked companies, including SpaceX, xAI, and X. An IPO is when a private company starts selling shares to the public, like opening a store to everyone instead of only to invited customers.
This deal shows how valuable AI coding tools have become, and how much big companies are willing to spend to secure them. If SpaceX ends up buying Cursor, it could affect which AI tools engineers use and which companies lead in software and AI development. Even if the purchase does not happen, the $10 billion payment signals that partnerships around AI development can now be priced like major acquisitions.
