SpaceX and Blue Origin are planning satellite networks that could run AI computing in space using solar power, a move that may also help smaller partners.
In short: SpaceX and Blue Origin are pushing plans to run parts of AI computing on satellites in space, aiming to use solar power and ease pressure on Earth’s power grids.
Companies building AI systems need huge amounts of electricity and often lots of water to keep computers cool. In response, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin are exploring “data centers in space,” which means putting powerful computers on satellites and running them using sunlight (like moving a power-hungry factory to a place with constant free energy).
SpaceX is seeking US approval from the Federal Communications Commission for up to 1 million satellites. The idea is a distributed network, meaning many satellites share the work instead of one large site on the ground. Musk has said launching hardware with Starship could make this cheaper, and he argues space-based AI computing could become cost-effective within about 30 to 36 months.
Blue Origin filed plans on March 19, 2026 for “Project Sunrise,” a proposed constellation of up to 51,600 satellites for high-energy computing in orbit. It would connect with a separate Blue Origin network called TeraWave, which is planned to start launches from late 2027. Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket is central to its cost goals, though testing has reportedly slipped to early April 2026.
Skeptics say space data centers may not make practical sense because of heat removal, radiation, communications links, and launch costs. Still, the push is already creating openings for smaller firms such as Starcloud, Aetherflux, and Planet Labs, which are working with partners like Nvidia and Google on early tests. The next signals to watch are regulatory approvals, successful rocket test flights, and whether demo satellites can run chips reliably in orbit.
