Some shared Claude chatbot chats showed up in Google and Bing search

In short: Some Anthropic Claude chat links that users shared publicly were picked up by search engines, making the chats easy to find.

What happened

Over the weekend, people noticed that some Claude conversations could be found through web searches. The issue was first widely flagged in a Reddit post, and the results included chats about politics, legal questions, and sexual role play.

Claude lets users share a “snapshot” of a chat by creating a public web link. Think of it like getting a special URL you can send to a friend. If that link is public, it can sometimes end up being listed by search engines.

Anthropic tries to stop this by using a robots.txt file. That is a simple set of instructions for web crawlers (the automated “scanners” search engines use) that says, in effect, “do not list these pages.” But Bing’s own documentation says developers should also add a “noindex” tag on the page itself, which is like putting a clear “do not file this in the library catalog” label on each page.

WIRED reviewed some exposed Claude share pages and reported they did not include a “noindex” tag. Google’s documentation says robots.txt alone may not prevent indexing if the page is linked somewhere else online, unless the page also uses “noindex” or similar controls.

Google told WIRED this was Anthropic’s responsibility. Microsoft and Anthropic did not comment to WIRED.

Why it matters

Many people treat chatbot conversations like private messages. This incident is a reminder that using a “share” feature can turn a chat into a public web page, and that public pages can sometimes show up in search. Claude users can review and manage shared links in Settings, then Privacy, then Shared chats.
