Teachers are testing rules for classroom AI use, aiming to keep students learning while avoiding over-reliance on chatbots for answers.
In short: Schools are trying to find practical ways for students to use AI tools without letting them replace real learning.
Some teachers say the problem is not only students using AI too much, but also students avoiding it. At Thames Christian School in London, innovation lead Madeleine Champagnie says many students are worried that using AI could harm their long-term skills. She says she has even had to encourage high-performing students to try it.
At the same time, research and teacher experience suggest a different pattern in other classrooms. Some students are starting to lean on AI as a shortcut, using it instead of building critical thinking and independent judgment. “Cognitive offloading” is the idea that if you always hand your thinking to a tool, your own skills can weaken (like using a calculator for every simple sum, then struggling without it).
Schools still have one built-in control, timed and supervised exams that do not allow digital devices. But some studies have found a catch. AI can improve speed and results in the short term, yet when it is taken away later, students may do worse than students who never used it.
Educators are now testing “guardrails,” meaning clear rules for when AI is allowed and what it is allowed to do. A March report by the Australian Network for Quality Digital Education warns about “false mastery,” where students feel they understand because the AI produced good work. It also argues AI can help when it handles small tasks like grammar checks, freeing students to focus on harder work like building arguments and checking evidence.
Tools that tutor by asking guiding questions, rather than giving answers, may become more common. These tools act more like a coach than a cheat sheet.
