Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela says AI tools could let Hollywood spread a $100M budget across many films instead of one blockbuster.

Valenzuela, who leads AI video company Runway, made the comments at Semafor’s World Economy Summit this week. He suggested that if a studio spends $100 million on one 90-minute film, it could instead use that money to make around 50 movies.
His argument is simple. If you make more films, you get more chances to make a hit. He described this as a “quantity” problem, meaning success comes from trying more times, not just betting big on one project.
Valenzuela also said AI is already lowering costs across the whole filmmaking process. He mentioned areas like writing, planning, filming, and visual effects. Visual effects are the computer-made scenes you see in many movies, like explosions or fantasy worlds.
The broader idea is already showing up in the industry. TechCrunch pointed to “Bitcoin: Killing Satoshi,” a film reported by TheWrap to have used AI to cut estimated production costs from $300 million to $70 million. The story also notes that Amazon, Sony Pictures, and some studios in India have talked about using AI to reduce costs, and filmmaker James Cameron has spoken in support of AI for keeping big movies affordable.
AI in Hollywood remains controversial, especially among people who worry about how it affects creative work and jobs. The key question is whether making many cheaper films will actually lead to more good movies, or just more movies (like printing more lottery tickets and hoping one wins).
