Runware says its new Sonic Inference Pod is a transportable, modular data center for running AI results faster and with less water for cooling.
In short: Runware has launched a transportable, modular data center it calls the Sonic Inference Pod.
Runware, a company that provides the computing power used to run AI systems, announced a new product called the Sonic Inference Pod. A data center is basically a building full of computers, and Runware’s version is designed to be a single unit you can move and set up in different places.
The company says the pod is meant for “inference,” which is the step where an AI model produces an answer, an image, or another result after you ask it to do something (like a calculator giving you the output after you type in numbers). Runware argues that placing these pods closer to users can reduce delays, and that new pods can be added faster than expanding a traditional, fixed data center.
Runware says its pods use a closed-loop cooling system and do not rely on water for cooling. It also says pods can be built in days, compared to months or years for large data center projects. The company told TechCrunch it has 10 pods deployed across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, and it currently provides inference for companies including Higgsfield AI and Wix.
AI services are using more electricity and more computer capacity, and many communities are concerned about the impact of large data centers. A smaller, movable setup could give companies another way to add capacity, but questions about power use and local effects will still matter wherever the pods are placed.
