Reports do not support claim SoftBank won Meta and OpenAI for new AI chip

Available reporting points to SoftBank and OpenAI funding AI data centers and OpenAI itself, not a SoftBank-owned new processor used by Meta and OpenAI.

About 3 hours ago•Infrastructure

In short: Recent reporting does not show a SoftBank-owned tech group landing Meta and OpenAI as customers for a new AI processor, and the confirmed news is about data centers and funding.

What happened

A claim is circulating that a SoftBank-owned tech group has secured Meta and OpenAI as the first customers for its long-awaited new AI processor. An AI processor is a specialized computer chip that helps run AI systems (like a fast engine designed for one kind of work).

Based on available reports, there is no clear public announcement supporting that specific customer win. In particular, there are no confirmed reports that a SoftBank-owned company has introduced a new processor and named Meta and OpenAI as the first buyers.

Instead, the clearest recent SoftBank and OpenAI developments are about building and powering the places where AI runs. In March 2026, SB Energy, a SoftBank subsidiary focused on energy and data center development, received $1 billion in total investments, $500 million from OpenAI and $500 million from SoftBank, to build new AI data centers in the US. OpenAI also selected SB Energy to build and operate a 1.2 gigawatt data center in Milam County, Texas.

Separately, reports say SoftBank committed $30 billion to OpenAI starting April 1, 2026, as part of a larger funding round. This would bring SoftBank’s total reported investment in OpenAI to about $64.6 billion.

Why it matters

AI progress depends not only on chips, but also on the expensive “factories” that run them, which are data centers (warehouses full of computers). If the real action is in funding and building these facilities, it helps explain why big AI companies are raising large sums and paying close attention to power and construction, not just new processors.
