Reports say Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio in a stock deal worth about $400 million to expand its AI work for drug and health research.
In short: Reports say Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio in a stock deal valued at about $400 million.
Anthropic has acquired Coefficient Bio, a small biotech AI startup that had been operating in stealth mode, meaning it worked quietly without public marketing. The acquisition was reported by The Information and described in a letter obtained by journalist Eric Newcomer, according to TechCrunch.
The deal was announced on April 3 and was paid in stock, not cash. Coefficient Bio was founded about eight months ago and reportedly had fewer than 10 employees.
Coefficient Bio was building AI models for biological research. That includes planning drug research, advising on clinical regulatory strategy (the steps needed to get a medicine approved), and helping find new drug candidates. Its team is expected to join Anthropic’s Health Care Life Sciences group, led by Eric Kauderer-Abrams.
The reports also say Anthropic wants to improve tools used in biotech “workflows” (the day to day process teams follow, like a checklist and assembly line combined). The move could also support Anthropic’s partnerships with drug companies, including Sanofi and Novo Nordisk.
AI companies are increasingly buying small, specialized teams to move into specific industries faster. In this case, Anthropic appears to be trying to build more AI tools for drug and health research, where better planning and earlier discovery can save time and money. For the public, the long-term impact depends on whether these tools actually help researchers develop safe and effective medicines sooner.
