Reddit plans new human checks to reduce bots while keeping anonymity

Reddit says it may ask some users to prove they are human to fight bots, using options like Face ID, Touch ID, or mobile IDs without sharing names.

About 2 hours ago•Ethics & Safety

In short: Reddit says it is exploring optional ways for some users to prove they are human, aiming to reduce bots while keeping users anonymous.

What happened

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said the company is working on identity verification measures to deal with bots and other inauthentic activity. Bots are accounts run by software that can post and vote at scale, like a room full of fake people talking at once.

Huffman described “lightweight” options that could confirm a real person is behind an account. Examples include Face ID and Touch ID, which are phone features that unlock your device with your face or fingerprint. He also mentioned using outside verification providers, including decentralized ones (meaning there is no single company holding all the data).

Reddit says it wants to confirm “personhood” without forcing users to hand over sensitive personal details like a name, address, or birth date. One idea is using mobile driver’s licenses, which are available in about 20 US states and can be checked through Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Reddit could get a yes or no answer that someone is a real person, without learning much else, like showing a bouncer a wristband instead of your full ID.

Reddit is also introducing a labeling system for accounts that are registered as bots. It may ask users showing “automated” or “fishy” behavior to verify they are human, and in some cases to submit an ID.

Why it matters

Reddit has more than 500 million monthly users, and bots can distort conversations and spam communities. At the same time, identity checks can create risks, like discouraging people from speaking freely or exposing data if there is a breach. Reddit is trying to balance those concerns by verifying humans while keeping anonymity as a priority.
