Several early 2026 polls find mixed views on AI data centers, with worries about higher utility bills, pollution, and local impacts, but more support for clean energy.
In short: New polls in early 2026 show Americans are divided about AI data centers, with many worried about costs and pollution, and more support when sites use clean energy.
AI data centers, which are large buildings filled with computers (like a giant warehouse for digital work), are becoming a local issue in many parts of the US. Several recent surveys show that many people think the downsides for nearby communities outweigh the benefits.
In one set of polling results, 48% of voters said the burdens on communities are greater than the benefits, while 22% said benefits are greater. Higher utility costs were the top worry. In head-to-head questions, 64% picked utility costs as their main concern.
Other polls show similar tension. A January survey found 58% oppose fast-tracking big tech data centers because of heavy water and land use and pollution. It also found 72% are less supportive if data centers are built on federal land without an environmental review, which is basically a formal check of likely harm to air, water, and wildlife.
Not all results are strongly negative. A separate survey found about 40% of people favor data centers in their own neighborhood, compared with 32% who oppose. Another national question found 43% support new data centers if developers reimburse communities for water and electricity use, while 41% oppose.
Clean power changes minds. One poll found support rises when data centers run on clean energy, and drops when they rely on fossil fuels.
Expect more local fights over permits, power lines, water use, and who pays when electricity demand jumps. Polling suggests governors are trusted more than federal leaders to handle the issue, and proposals that stop costs from being passed to residents may gain traction.
