A Verge report says OpenAI may unveil Aeon, a 24/7 AI helper, as it tries to catch up with rivals like Meta’s Muse and Google’s Gemini Spark.
In short: OpenAI is widely rumored to announce a new always-on AI assistant called Aeon at its DevDay event as competition in AI agents grows.
A report from The Verge says OpenAI may use its DevDay 2026 event to introduce a consumer AI agent called Aeon. An AI agent is a chatbot that can also take actions for you, like booking travel, ordering groceries, or scheduling appointments (think of it like a digital assistant that can actually click buttons and fill out forms).
The Verge says OpenAI helped make chatbots popular, but it has been slower than rivals in this newer category of always-running assistants. The biggest competitor mentioned is Meta’s Muse, which The Verge says has topped App Store charts and reached about 600,000 daily active users in the US, citing Apptopia. Other competitors include Google’s Gemini Spark, which The Verge says connects to more than 30 outside services like Dropbox, Uber, and Spotify, plus Instinct, which is known for being easy to use through common chat apps.
The Verge also highlights a major worry: safety and privacy. Because agents can be allowed to act on your behalf, a security mistake can have real consequences, like someone taking over an account. The report points to past issues, including a vulnerability that Meta patched, and user complaints that Muse shared a home address without permission or read private messages, although individual stories can be hard to confirm.
Little is confirmed about Aeon yet, but The Verge notes OpenAI has hired Peter Steinberger, the creator of the OpenClaw agent. If OpenAI announces Aeon, watch for two things: what apps and services it can connect to, and what protections it has to prevent unwanted access or sharing.
