Creators who attended OpenAI’s first luxury brand trip faced criticism, with commenters citing AI’s energy use, data centers, and government contracts.
In short: OpenAI invited influencers to a luxury retreat to learn its products, and the posts about it triggered widespread criticism.
Over the weekend, OpenAI hosted what TechCrunch described as its first influencer “brand trip,” a sponsored getaway for online creators. The event, called “Summer Club,” took place at a luxury retreat in upstate New York.
According to posts shared by attendees, the trip included farm-to-table dinners, wellness activities such as beekeeping, and classes on how to use OpenAI tools. Some creators shared light, lifestyle-style videos, like taking photos of a “painting workshop” brochure or talking about building a website.
The reaction online was often harsh. Commenters accused creators of promoting OpenAI in exchange for a luxury stay. Others asked influencers to address concerns about AI data centers, which are large buildings full of computers (like warehouses for internet services) that can use a lot of electricity and water.
The backlash landed as OpenAI faces wider scrutiny. TechCrunch noted OpenAI is expected to strike a $500 billion deal to build a data center in Ohio, and it has a $200 million contract with the US Department of Defense. OpenAI did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
More AI companies are working with influencers, but this episode suggests these promotions can backfire. For OpenAI, the next question is whether it changes how it markets its products, especially while concerns about AI’s environmental impact and government use are growing.
