OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and over 100 firms signed a letter warning AI could make hacking and scams easier soon, and urging faster cyber defenses.
In short: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and more than 100 other companies signed an open letter warning that AI-powered cyberattacks could increase within months.
A large group of tech and security companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, signed an open letter about cyber risk. Cybersecurity firms like CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet also signed.
The letter says that as AI systems get better, criminals could use them to carry out more cyberattacks with less effort and less skill. It points to common attack types like phishing (fake messages that trick you into giving up passwords) and hacking that takes advantage of software weaknesses.
The group wrote that “in the coming months, AI-enabled cyber attacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated.” They also said there is a limited window of time to improve defenses before these tools make attacks easier to do at large scale, like giving more people a faster set of lock picks.
Cyberattacks do not just hit big tech companies. They can disrupt hospitals, local governments, utilities, and banks, which can affect everyday services like medical appointments, water systems, and paychecks.
The letter urges leaders to treat cybersecurity as a top priority, not a back-office IT task. It also calls for faster fixes to known software problems, better sharing of threat information, and giving trusted defenders access to strong AI tools so they are not fighting with weaker equipment than attackers.
