OpenAI expands ChatGPT Health to all US users over 18

What happened

OpenAI announced it is rolling out ChatGPT Health to all logged-in users in the United States who are 18 or older. It will be available on the web and iOS this week for people on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.

ChatGPT Health is a part of ChatGPT meant for health-related questions. OpenAI started testing it in January through a dedicated “health hub,” which worked like a separate room inside ChatGPT where health questions were supposed to go.

During testing, OpenAI said people were asking about 230 million health-related questions each week. The company now says that number has grown to 300 million a week.

A key part of the feature is connecting your own information from other services. OpenAI says users can link data from apps like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. Users can also connect medical records from some hospital systems, including Epic and Oracle Health, plus platforms like One Medical and Function Health.

OpenAI says it found that about 70% of health questions were asked outside the health hub. With this change, users can choose to let ChatGPT use their connected health information in regular chats, like asking about foods that may trigger an allergy.

Why it matters

Many people already ask chatbots health questions, but studies have warned that AI chatbots can give unsafe advice. OpenAI also says its service is not meant to diagnose or treat medical conditions, and it tells users to double-check information and make medical decisions with a professional.
