OpenAI is postponing its planned “adult mode” for ChatGPT again, saying it is focusing on other updates like smarter replies and a more proactive assistant.
In short: OpenAI has delayed its planned “adult mode” setting for ChatGPT for a second time.
OpenAI said in early March 2026 that it is postponing the rollout of an “adult mode” feature for ChatGPT. The company had previously said the feature would arrive in December 2025, then moved it to the first quarter of 2026.
“Adult mode” is meant to let verified adults access more mature, erotic content in text chats. “Verified” generally means the system would try to confirm a user is an adult before allowing that content, like a bouncer checking an ID at a door.
OpenAI’s public reason for the delay is that it is focusing on other work that it says more people want right now. The company pointed to improvements to ChatGPT’s intelligence, its “personality” (how it talks and behaves), and making it more proactive, meaning it would be better at suggesting helpful next steps without being asked every time.
An OpenAI spokesperson said the company still supports the idea of “treating adults like adults,” but that “getting the experience right will take more time.”
Some reporting has also described internal concerns about risks, including users becoming emotionally attached, compulsive use, and mistakes in age checks. The Verge noted age verification systems can be imperfect, including cases where minors were incorrectly identified as adults.
This delay affects what ChatGPT will and will not allow in everyday conversations, and it highlights a bigger challenge for AI chatbots: adding adult-only features depends on reliable age checks, and those checks can fail.
