Reports say OpenAI is negotiating a private funding round of up to $30B at a $1.25T valuation, as it also prepares for a future IPO.
In short: OpenAI is reportedly negotiating a private funding round of up to $30 billion that would value the company at about $1.25 trillion.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is said to be working on raising up to $30 billion in new private funding. “Private funding” means money from investors while the company stays privately owned, rather than selling shares on the stock market.
TechCrunch reports that CNBC cited sources who said the round could be led by investment firm Coatue, along with investors in the United Arab Emirates. The reported valuation is $1.25 trillion before the new money is added. Valuation is the price investors are putting on the whole company, like an appraiser estimating what a house is worth.
The terms are still being negotiated, and the final numbers could change. CNBC also reported that some funding from the UAE could be linked to a separate deal for more “computing capacity,” meaning access to more powerful computers that run AI systems (think of it like renting more engine power to handle more work). OpenAI declined to comment.
If the deal happens at over $1 trillion, it could make OpenAI the most highly valued private company ever. It could also shape what happens next with an IPO, which is when a company starts selling shares to the public on a stock exchange.
OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, according to TechCrunch, after a March funding round that valued it at $852 billion post money. The new valuation could also affect rival Anthropic, which is also reportedly preparing for an IPO.
