Barack Obama said Democrats should make AI a central issue and create a clear plan to address safety and economic concerns, according to reports.
In short: Former President Barack Obama said Democrats need a clear plan to deal with AI’s safety risks and its impact on jobs and the economy.
Obama made the comments at a Democratic fundraising event, where he was interviewed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, according to The New York Times, as reported by TechCrunch. Jeffries asked how congressional Democrats should approach artificial intelligence, often called AI.
Obama said that if Democrats regain control of the House, they should create a framework for a very public conversation. He warned that AI is moving quickly in private companies’ hands, and that could be dangerous if government does not keep up. At the same time, he said AI could be beneficial, and pointed to faster drug development as one possible upside.
Jeffries agreed in a statement, saying decisive action is needed. He also criticized Republicans, saying they have not taken responsibility for governing on the issue.
The comments come during a wider debate about AI safety. TechCrunch noted recent concerns raised after an AI researcher resigned from Anthropic and warned that companies may be pushing too fast toward systems that can improve themselves. Separately, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has described ideas like independent safety checks, which are like outside inspectors getting access to test how risky these systems are.
AI is already affecting everyday life, from what people see online to how businesses hire and operate. Clear rules can help reduce harms like fraud, unsafe systems, and job disruption, while still allowing useful benefits such as medical research improvements.
