The advice is to stop the conversation right away, report the chat to the company that runs the chatbot, and keep a copy of the messages. In extreme cases, prolonged use can worsen paranoia or delusions, and the column points to past reporting linking a companion bot to a serious attempted attack.
Another situation is when a chatbot makes up false claims about someone, sometimes called “hallucinations” (when the bot confidently says something untrue). The recommended steps are to save screenshots with dates and times, contact the provider to fix or delete the wrong information, and consider legal options if the false claim harms your reputation.
