On September 2, 2026, New York City announced its final policy. It set a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for grades 2-K through 8. Generative AI is the kind of software that can write text or answer questions like a chatbot (like a homework helper that talks back).
The policy also bans “companion chatbots” across all grades. These are chatbots designed to act like a friend or partner for ongoing conversations.
Alongside the AI limits, the city added recommended daily screen-time caps. The guidance suggests about 30 minutes a day for grades 3 to 5 and about 45 minutes a day for grades 6 to 8, with tighter limits for younger students.
High school students were not fully banned from AI. Instead, they are expected to get AI literacy lessons and take part in limited, supervised AI pilot programs.
Teachers can still use AI for some work tasks, like lesson planning or drafting messages. They cannot use it for grading, special education planning, student mental health work, or discipline decisions.
This is one of the stricter school AI policies in the US. For families, it sets clear limits on what tools younger students can use in class, and it also puts new boundaries around daily screen use.
