New York City’s growing AI scene becomes an easy target for satire

In short: New York City now has so many AI companies that the local AI scene is becoming common material for jokes and satire.

Directories and industry roundups suggest that AI companies are now everywhere in New York City. Depending on how each list counts, the city has hundreds to more than a thousand AI related firms.

Built In’s 2026 directory lists 966 AI companies in New York City. F6S, which runs a startup community database, says it is tracking 1,216 or more AI companies in the city.

Other tallies are smaller but still point the same direction. Lux Capital lists 150 or more AI companies in its directory and estimates New York City has 35 “AI unicorns” (private companies valued at $1 billion or more). Lux also points to major AI presences in the city, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, Databricks, Google DeepMind, Palantir, Datadog, MongoDB, Stripe, and Figma.

This growing visibility helps explain why a humorist would see the AI scene as ripe for mocking. When something shows up in many neighborhoods and industries, it becomes easier to recognize and easier to joke about, like a new chain store that suddenly seems to be on every block.

What to watch

As more companies brand themselves as “AI” and more big tech teams expand in New York, expect more cultural commentary, along with closer attention to what these tools actually do. Keep an eye on whether the city’s AI boom translates into clear benefits for everyday workers and consumers, not just more startups with similar promises.
