Nvidia says it will invest $1.5B in SB Energy and provide credit to help build an OpenAI-linked data center near Cincinnati.
In short: Nvidia says it will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, tying its chips to an OpenAI-linked data center project in Ohio.
Nvidia said it will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, a company backed by SoftBank and OpenAI that develops data centers and power projects. A data center is a large building filled with computers that run online services, like a warehouse full of servers.
Nvidia said the deal makes it the only supplier of “compute infrastructure” for OpenAI’s Ports-Pike data center near Cincinnati, Ohio. In simple terms, Nvidia’s chips and related hardware will be the main engines inside the building, like being the exclusive maker of the motors in a factory.
Nvidia also said it will provide up to $105 billion in credit to help build the facility. The project could grow from 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts, which is a measure of how much electrical power the site can use.
SB Energy is also tied to plans for a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on the same site, on land owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The location previously enriched uranium for the U.S. nuclear arsenal and for U.S. Navy submarines.
Big AI systems need huge amounts of electricity and specialized chips, and those needs are starting to shape where and how new computer centers get built. This deal shows how closely AI companies, chip suppliers, and power projects are linking up, and it also highlights a potential pressure point: the cost and availability of natural gas and electricity that will keep these facilities running.
