Nvidia says it will acquire Hugging Face, a major hub for open AI models and data sets, in a deal valued at nearly $13 billion.
In short: Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion, giving the chip company a major home base for shared AI models and data.
Nvidia said Thursday that it has agreed to buy Hugging Face, a company known for online tools that help developers build with AI. Hugging Face also hosts a large public library of AI models and data sets.
Many of these resources are “open source,” which means the underlying code is shared so others can study it, reuse it, and improve it. Hugging Face is often described as a central meeting place for AI builders, like a public library where people can borrow and contribute.
Nvidia said it plans to maintain Hugging Face’s current open standards. Nvidia already offers its own free, customizable “open-weights” AI models through a set called Nemotron. “Open weights” means the model’s learned settings are shared, so others can run it and adapt it, rather than only accessing it through a locked service.
The acquisition also fits Nvidia’s push to be more than a hardware company. Nvidia sells the GPUs (graphics chips) that many AI systems run on, but it has also been expanding its software and developer tools.
This deal could shape how widely shared AI tools are built and distributed. If Nvidia keeps Hugging Face open and well funded, more startups, schools, and researchers may be able to use strong AI building blocks without starting from scratch. At the same time, it puts a major “public library” of AI resources under the control of one of the most powerful companies in the AI supply chain.
