Modal Labs is reportedly close to raising about $750M led by Accel, valuing the company at $15.75B, as demand grows for running AI models.
In short: Modal Labs is reportedly close to raising about $750 million in new funding led by Accel, valuing the company at about $15.75 billion.
A source told TechCrunch that Modal Labs, a company that provides infrastructure for running AI, is nearing a $750 million funding round. The round is said to be led by Accel, a well-known venture capital firm.
The reported $15.75 billion valuation includes the new investment. If the deal closes, it would more than triple Modal’s valuation from about $4.65 billion, which was set just four months ago when Modal announced a $355 million fundraise. Modal Labs declined to comment, according to TechCrunch.
Modal sells “inference” services. Inference is the step where a trained AI model is actually used to produce answers, images, or other results (like using a finished recipe to cook meals, rather than developing the recipe).
TechCrunch also notes that other companies in this same area are discussing new fundraising at higher valuations. These include Baseten, Fireworks, and Fal. The report adds that even as revenue grows, profits can stay slim because renting the needed computing power is still expensive.
Many AI apps depend on outside companies to supply the computing power behind the scenes. If Modal and similar providers keep raising large rounds, it signals that investors expect heavy demand for the “plumbing” that makes AI tools run, and that the costs and security of these services will keep drawing attention.
