Mistral AI says it will invest €1.2B to build its first data center outside France, working with Sweden’s EcoDataCenter and aiming for Q2 2026.
In short: Mistral AI says it will invest €1.2 billion to build an AI data center in Sweden, its first one outside France.
Mistral AI announced plans to build a new data center in Sweden with EcoDataCenter, a local company that builds these facilities. A data center is a large building full of computers, like a power plant but for computing (it turns electricity into computing work).
Mistral says the Sweden site will provide 23 megawatts of computing power. The company highlighted Sweden’s lower carbon energy and relatively low energy costs as key reasons for the location.
Mistral also said the project supports its plan to control more of its own infrastructure, instead of relying only on outside providers. It described using the site for customer work during the day and for training its AI models at night. The company framed this as helping “European data sovereignty,” meaning customers can keep their data stored and processed in Europe. Mistral said clients include ASML, TotalEnergies, HSBC, and several governments, including France, Germany, and Estonia.
Mistral has said it aims to start operating the data center by the second quarter of 2026. However, one report published in February 2026 said the facility is “expected to go into operation next year,” which would point to 2027.
AI systems need a lot of electricity and computing power, and where that computing happens can affect cost, climate impact, and where sensitive data lives. For businesses and governments in Europe, a local option may reduce reliance on US-based AI providers and make it simpler to meet local rules about data.
