Countries are adding AI to weapons, targeting, cyber attacks, and propaganda, speeding up warfare and raising risks of mistakes and civilian harm.
In short: Countries are racing to use AI in war, and it is speeding up decisions while raising new risks.
Defense spending is at record highs, and more of it is going into AI. Here, AI means software that can quickly sort huge amounts of data and suggest actions, like a very fast assistant. Major powers like the United States, China, and Russia, plus countries such as India, Israel, Iran, and NATO members, are competing to build and deploy these systems.
One big shift is speed. In the current U.S.–Iran war, U.S. Central Command says steps that once took hours or days can now happen in seconds, with AI reviewing battlefield data and recommending strikes. When decisions move that fast, it can be harder for people to double-check the information and harder to know who is responsible if something goes wrong.
Autonomous weapons are also moving from theory to reality. In Ukraine, some drones can pick targets when jamming blocks direct human control. Officials in the UK and elsewhere are debating whether humans must always choose targets, partly out of concern that opponents may not follow the same rule.
AI is also reshaping cyber attacks and propaganda. In cyber operations, AI can help automate steps in an attack, like trying many doors quickly until one opens. Analysts also expect more AI-made fake audio, video, and text aimed at influencing public opinion, including around Taiwan.
Governments and international groups are discussing rules for autonomous weapons and military AI, but there is no single global set of binding rules. Watch for whether countries require meaningful human oversight, independent testing, and clear accountability, especially as faster systems can increase the chance of accidents and escalation.
