Microsoft is taking out extra Copilot buttons in Windows 11 apps like Notepad and Snipping Tool, while keeping the same AI features under new menus.
In short: Microsoft is starting to remove extra Copilot buttons from several built-in Windows 11 apps.
Microsoft is changing how its Copilot features show up inside Windows 11 apps. Copilot is Microsoft’s name for its built-in AI helper (like a built-in writing and editing assistant).
In the newest version of Notepad for Windows Insiders, the Copilot button is gone. Windows Insiders are people who test early versions of Windows updates before they reach everyone else (like a preview group). Instead of a Copilot button, Notepad now shows a “writing tools” menu.
Microsoft is also removing the Copilot button in the Snipping Tool when you select an area to capture. The Verge reports that Microsoft previously said it would reduce “unnecessary” Copilot entry points, starting with apps such as Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad.
The change appears to be mostly about where the button lives and what it is called. The underlying AI options seem to remain available, just presented in a different menu. Think of it like moving a shortcut on your desk into a folder, the tool is still there, but it is less in your face.
Microsoft has not said in this update whether it will also remove other Copilot buttons elsewhere in Windows 11, or change its earlier push to add Copilot buttons to more places, including some PC keyboards.
