Microsoft announced Project Zenith, a Windows setup for developers on new PCs with 64GB or more memory, with fewer distractions and preinstalled tools.
In short: Microsoft has introduced Project Zenith, a special Windows setup made to help software developers start work faster and avoid distractions.
Microsoft says it is giving its developer-optimized Windows experience an official name, Project Zenith. The company first talked about a similar effort at its Build developer event earlier this year.
Project Zenith is meant for new developer-focused devices that have 64GB or more of unified memory, which is the device’s main working memory shared across parts of the computer (like having one big desk instead of separate small tables). Microsoft says this extra memory helps developers run large AI models on the device itself, instead of paying for online services that charge per use.
AMD announced the first Project Zenith device at IFA, a miniature PC using AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo chips. Microsoft says more Project Zenith devices are coming in the next few months, including models with different chips.
These devices will ship with a preconfigured Windows setup and common developer tools already installed, including Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills. Microsoft is also changing several Windows defaults to reduce noise, for example turning off Start menu tips and some account notifications, and setting File Explorer to show file extensions and hidden files.
Most people will not buy a “developer PC,” but this shows where Windows may be heading. If these changes work well, they could influence future Windows settings for everyone, especially as more work moves toward running AI features directly on personal computers.
