Microsoft marks 50 years with a renewed push for AI products

Microsoft used its 50th anniversary to highlight Copilot, AI in Bing, and plans to blend AI with Windows and cloud services, Wired reports.

About 2 hours ago•Trending & Viral

In short: Microsoft marked its 50th anniversary by spotlighting its AI plans and the partner network it says will help it compete in the next wave of computing.

What happened

Microsoft, founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, held 50th anniversary events around April 4, 2025. A main celebration took place at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The company highlighted its past products, like MS-DOS and Windows, alongside newer businesses like Azure, its cloud service (cloud services are like renting computing power and storage over the internet).

In remarks tied to the anniversary, CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft has repeatedly “reinvent”ed itself when big technology shifts happen. He pointed to the current shift toward AI, meaning software that can generate text, summarize information, and help with tasks. Microsoft highlighted Copilot, its AI assistant built into products such as Microsoft 365, as a key part of what comes next.

Executives also talked about putting AI into more of Microsoft’s everyday products. That includes AI features in Bing, which Microsoft launched in February 2023, plus plans to connect Windows PCs and Surface devices more closely with AI and the cloud. One executive described the goal as making AI feel like a built-in helper across the Windows ecosystem (an ecosystem is the connected set of devices, apps, and services that work together).

Microsoft also used the anniversary to recognize its large partner network, which it says includes about 500,000 partners. It announced “One Future, One Sound” grants of $50,000 to 50 community changemakers in the Puget Sound region.

Why it matters

For many people, Microsoft’s choices shape the tools they use at work and school. If Microsoft succeeds in making AI a standard feature in Windows, search, and Office apps, AI could become as common as spellcheck, built in and hard to avoid.
