Mia Goth’s team says a verified Instagram fan account posted an AI-made image of her, and the post went viral before the account was removed.
In short: Actress Mia Goth’s representatives say a verified Instagram fan account posted an AI-made image of her, and it spread widely online.
Earlier this month, reports said actress Mia Goth filed for divorce from actor and filmmaker Shia LaBeouf. Soon after, an Instagram post from an account called miagoth_ appeared and spread quickly.
The post showed what looked like Goth wearing a T-shirt with the words “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN.” The post also used the Beyoncé song “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” and it received hundreds of thousands of likes. Some entertainment outlets reported on the image as if it were real, and screenshots spread to other social media sites.
Goth’s representatives told The Verge the image was not real. They said it was generated using AI, meaning it was made by software that can create fake but believable pictures (like a convincing counterfeit photo). They also said Goth does not run social media accounts, and that they had asked Instagram to remove the verified fan account for posting “counterfeit” AI images.
The account was labeled as fan-run, but it had a blue checkmark. For many people, that checkmark can look like proof an account is official. Meta, which owns Instagram, has sold verification badges in recent years, which can add to confusion. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the account appeared to be wiped from Instagram as of Tuesday morning.
This shows how easily a fake image can look official and spread fast, especially when it comes from an account with a verification badge. For regular users, it is a reminder to be cautious with viral posts, even when they seem to come from a “verified” source.
