Meta is turning on a setting that lets people use public Instagram photos and videos to make new AI images, including realistic images of you, unless you opt out.
In short: If you have a public Instagram account and you are 18 or older, Meta now lets other people use your public posts to generate AI images by default unless you change your settings or go private.
Meta is rolling out a new image system called Muse Image inside Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta AI app. A “generative” image tool is software that can make a new picture from a text request, like typing what you want and getting an image back (like ordering a custom illustration from a machine).
At the same time, Instagram’s help and privacy pages say public photos and videos from adult accounts can be reused with Meta’s AI features by default. That means other people may be able to use your public posts as ingredients to create new images, including realistic images that look like you.
One key detail is that Instagram says you will not be notified if someone creates AI content using your posts. And if you turn off reuse now, it is meant to stop future use, but it does not erase AI images that were already created.
For regular Instagram users, this changes what “public” can mean. It is not just that people can view or share your post, they can also use it to create new images that may look real. If you want to reduce the risk, Instagram points to a setting under Settings, then Sharing and reuse, where you can turn off reuse for Posts and Reels, or you can switch your account to private.
