Reports about 10 new natural gas plants are not backed by public project details. Meta is working with Entergy Louisiana on at least 1.5 GW of renewables.
In short: Public project details for Meta’s Hyperion site in Louisiana point to new renewable power and grid upgrades, not 10 new natural gas plants.
A claim has circulated that Meta’s upcoming Hyperion AI data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, will be powered by 10 new natural gas plants. Available information about the Hyperion project does not support that.
Instead, the project is tied to a partnership with Entergy Louisiana to add at least 1.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy to the power grid. A gigawatt is a large amount of electricity, roughly like adding multiple big power plants worth of capacity. The planning also includes new substations and transmission lines, which are the electrical “switchyards” and long distance wires that move power where it is needed.
Hyperion is a very large campus. It is planned on an initial 2,250 acre site, with about 4 million square feet across up to nine buildings. Meta has said the site is meant for AI work, including training and running its Llama models, and it aims for more than 2 gigawatts of computing capacity by 2030, with the potential to scale higher.
Meta announced the project in October 2025 as a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital funds. Reports say funds own 80% and Meta owns 20%, with total costs up to $27 billion. Construction is underway, and Meta bought an additional 1,400 acres in February 2026 for expansion.
Big data centers can change local power needs quickly. Whether they rely on fossil fuels or add renewables affects electricity prices, grid reliability, and local emissions.
