Prosecutors say Daniel Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to California to target OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and later attacked Altman’s home and OpenAI’s office.
In short: Federal prosecutors say a Texas man tried to attack OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and OpenAI’s headquarters in California.
Daniel Moreno-Gama is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he traveled from Texas to California intending to kill Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI.
According to the US Department of Justice, Moreno-Gama was arrested on April 10 after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home. A Molotov cocktail is a homemade firebomb, usually a bottle filled with a flammable liquid that is set on fire.
Prosecutors also say Moreno-Gama tried to break into OpenAI’s headquarters. They allege he attempted to smash the building’s glass doors with a chair and said he came to burn down the location and kill anyone inside.
The Department of Justice says he is charged with attempted damage or destruction of property using explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. Prosecutors say the maximum sentences for those charges are 20 years and 10 years, respectively.
Police also say they recovered items including “incendiary devices,” a jug of kerosene, and a lighter. Officers also found a document titled “Your Last Warning” that, according to the criminal complaint, advocated violence against leaders of AI companies and included names and addresses of people connected to those companies.
This case highlights growing safety concerns around high-profile AI companies and their leaders. Even if you do not use AI tools yourself, threats like this can affect public events, office security, and how these companies operate day to day.
