LemonLime’s CEO said offering job interviews to people who got tattoos was reckless and promised to cover removal costs for anyone who regrets it.
In short: AI startup LemonLime said its offer of job interviews in exchange for tattoos was reckless and showed poor judgment.
LemonLime, a small AI startup, drew attention after hosting an afterparty in San Francisco on July 25. At the event, the company brought in a tattoo artist and told attendees it would give “instant interviews” to anyone willing to get a tattoo.
According to reporting cited by Ars Technica, seven people took the offer and got tattooed at the party. The tattoos included the company’s logo, although the CEO later said the logo was not required and that some people chose different designs.
After the stunt spread on social media and reached major news outlets, CEO Jordan Zietz apologized in a LinkedIn post on July 30. He said what he thought would be a fun way to meet candidates was “reckless,” because it connected a permanent body change to a job opportunity. He also said the company would cover tattoo removal costs for anyone who later regrets getting inked.
Job interviews are supposed to measure skills and fit, not how far someone will go to please a potential employer. Tying interviews to something permanent can create pressure, especially for people who need work. It is a bit like offering to “cut the line” for a job if someone does something they cannot easily undo later.
