A new GDC survey and recent studio disputes show a widening split between investors pushing AI and developers and players asking for limits and disclosure.
In short: Investors are pushing generative AI in games, but most developers and many players say they do not want it, and they want clear disclosure when it is used.
A public disagreement is growing in the game industry over generative AI, which is software that can create images, text, or voices after learning from lots of examples (like a student who studied a huge library and then imitates what it saw). At the 2026 Game Developers Conference, a survey found only 7% of developers said generative AI is “good for the industry.”
Some investors have reacted sharply. Lightspeed Venture Partners investor Moritz Baier-Lentz called the survey result “shocking and sad,” and he criticized what he sees as “demonization” of AI. He also said, “If game makers don’t like it, they could decide not to use it, you know?”
Developers say their concerns are not just about taste. Many worry about job losses after recent layoffs, especially in art and other creative roles. Others point to higher costs for graphics hardware (GPUs, the chips that help render game visuals and also run many AI tasks) and the environmental impact of large data centers.
Recent disputes show how messy this can get. Some studios have faced backlash when AI was used without clear communication, including cases involving placeholder art (temporary images meant to be replaced). At the same time, some companies say AI tools have helped productivity, while others reject AI-made assets entirely.
Transparency is becoming a central issue. Reports say about 90% of developers support Steam requiring games to disclose AI use, and future rules from platforms and publishers could decide how common AI becomes, and how much players trust it.
