Intel says it will help design and build Terafab in Austin, Texas, a planned factory meant to supply AI chips for SpaceX and Tesla.
In short: Intel says it will help design and build Elon Musk’s planned Terafab chip factory in Austin, Texas.
Intel announced it is signing on to support the design and construction of Terafab, a large semiconductor factory planned for Austin. A semiconductor factory, often called a “fab,” is a place that makes computer chips, like a highly specialized kitchen that can only bake one kind of very precise ingredient.
The factory is expected to supply AI chips to Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, which The Verge describes as newly merged with xAI. AI chips are specialized processors that help run AI software faster, similar to using a power tool instead of a hand tool for heavy work.
The Verge reports Musk has been publicly worried about whether the chip industry can make enough chips to meet rising demand. He has also said it is extremely hard to build a chip factory, which can cost billions of dollars and take years, and requires rare equipment and deep expertise.
Many products people see in everyday life, like driver assistance in cars and automation in factories, depend on a steady supply of chips. When chips are scarce, prices can rise and new features can be delayed. If Intel helps Musk build a dedicated supply line for AI chips, it could reduce some pressure for Tesla and SpaceX to compete for the same limited pool of chips as everyone else.
